The Gold In You

godly perspectives

…‘Love your neighbor as yourself’… Mark 12:31

As you learn to see others through God’s eyes, you’ll need to also grow in seeing yourself the way God sees you. The second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. How can you  fulfill the commandment at its fullest if you don’t have a pure love for yourself?

We are not talking about being selfish or merely pepping yourself up with a self help/self love. We are talking about receiving God’s heart toward you and learning to love yourself the way he loves you. This happens as you grow in understanding of how God created you and everyone else in his image with immeasurable value. Along with that, how he sent his Son to restore that image even when it was lost!

You have to learn to see yourself for more than what you’ve done. In fact, we all must learn to see ourselves through the lens of what Christ has done for us. If you measure yourself based off of your actions and shortcomings, you’ll never be more than what you’ve done. If you embrace this type of thinking for yourself, can you see how easily that could result in seeing other people that way?

For some people, they struggle to see the gold in others until they see it in themselves. Yet for others, they may more easily see the gold in others, and struggle to see it in themselves. Which one of these two describes you? Uncovering where you are can help you in the process of moving forward.

We know in the sinful flesh, “there is no good thing…” (Romans 7:18), but what we are talking about is fully identifying with who you are in Christ and his life in you. It can be a temptation to see yourself for the old man, but for the believer, you are a new creation. Living in that truth requires a constant focus and daily guarding of your mind to see yourself that way. Thinking of yourself in light of Christ is not thinking of yourself more highly than you ought. Seeing yourself through Christ is agreeing with what God has done for you.
